Say your vows surrounded by 24 carat gold in the ornate Drawing Room or Banqueting Room, followed by fine dining and dancing in the contemporary Grand Pavilion for up to 300 guests.

History

Hylands Estate was originally created in the 1730s, and was at the time a two-storey red brick building in the Queen Anne style of architecture. The current design was commissioned in the late 18th century by Humphry Repton, who rearranged the grounds and styled the house in the fashion of the Romantic Movement.

The house passed through a variety of different private owners until 1962, when the last of these, Christine Hanbury, died. The house was offered for sale and bought by Chelmsford Borough Council who started to renovate the property. In 1967 Hylands House was awarded a Grade II-listing, and in 1985 a dedicated restoration fund was set up. English Heritage permitted it to be reworked to its 19th century appearance, and it thus gained its star rating! It is now restored to how it looked in Victorian times.

Facilities

The Drawing Room

The Drawing Room features an ornate and gilded ceiling with a Victorian chandelier, hand-painted wall motifs and an original marble fireplace. The room benefits from large floor-to-ceiling windows which look over the parkland, the Serpentine Lake and French doors that open onto the Rose Terrace. Walk down the wide aisle, perfect for even the most magnificent of wedding gown, feeling like royalty on your special day.

Civil ceremony capacity - 100 guests

The Banqueting Room

This meticulously restored room is a firm nod to the Baroque Revival architecture of the 19th century. With intricate designs, bold embolisms and beautifully rich reds and golds, this room will take your breath away.

The room is the definition of opulence, covered in 24 carat gold leaf swags and scrolls with silk lined walls and an intricately designed marble fireplace. Natural light pours into the room through the floor to ceiling sash windows, giving a stunning view of the Serpentine Lake and the manicured parkland.

Available for both civil ceremonies and formal sit down wedding meals, this setting is really quite extraordinary.

Civil ceremony capacity - 100 guests
Wedding meal capacity - 80 guests
